Therapy for ADD & ADHD in Chalfont, PA
ADHD is commonly associated with difficulty paying attention.
In reality, its effects can reach much further.
Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder can influence organization, motivation, impulse control, emotional regulation, relationships, school performance, work, parenting, and self-esteem. A person with ADHD may know exactly what needs to be done yet struggle to begin.
They may become intensely focused on an interesting task while forgetting something important.
They may frequently lose track of time or become overwhelmed when several responsibilities compete for attention.
I provide ADHD therapy in Chalfont, Pennsylvania for children, adolescents, and adults who want practical strategies for managing these challenges more effectively.
ADHD Can Look Different From Person to Person
Some people with ADHD are visibly restless and impulsive. Others appear quiet but struggle internally with distraction, organization, forgetfulness, or mental overload.
Common challenges may include:
Difficulty sustaining attention
Procrastination
Poor time management
Forgetting appointments or responsibilities
Losing items
Trouble completing tasks
Impulsive decisions
Emotional reactivity
Difficulty shifting attention
Becoming overwhelmed by complex projects
Trouble following routines
Relationship conflict
These difficulties can create significant frustration because they are often mistaken for laziness, carelessness, or lack of motivation. Understanding the role ADHD plays can make it easier to develop strategies that actually work.
How ADHD Can Present Itself
01
ADHD & EXECUTIVE FUNCTIONING
Many ADHD-related difficulties involve executive functioning.
Executive functions help us organize behavior toward a goal. They include planning, prioritizing, working memory, impulse control, emotional regulation, and the ability to begin and complete tasks.
When these systems are inconsistent, everyday responsibilities may require far more effort than other people realize.
Therapy can help identify where executive functioning difficulties occur and develop external supports to compensate for them.
This might involve restructuring routines, breaking tasks into smaller steps, creating realistic deadlines, changing environmental cues, or developing strategies for maintaining motivation.

ADHD & EMOTIONAL REGULATION
ADHD does not only affect attention. Many people also experience emotions intensely.
A small frustration may quickly become overwhelming.
Criticism can feel particularly painful.
Impatience may lead to conflict. Once upset, it may take longer to calm down.
Therapy can help improve awareness of emotional escalation and create strategies for responding before emotions take control of behavior.

ADHD IN CHILDREN & ADOLESCENTS
Children with ADHD may struggle academically even when they clearly understand the material.
Homework gets lost. Directions are forgotten. Tasks are started but not completed. They may interrupt frequently, have difficulty waiting, become frustrated easily, or struggle with routines at home.
These difficulties can create repeated negative feedback from teachers, parents, and peers. Over time, some children begin believing they are simply “bad” at school or incapable of succeeding.
Treatment can help young people understand ADHD more accurately and develop skills that support greater independence and confidence.
Family involvement may also help parents establish clearer structures and respond more effectively to behavioral concerns.

ADHD IN ADULTS
Adult ADHD may become particularly noticeable when responsibilities increase.
Work deadlines. Bills. Parenting. Household management. Relationships. Appointments. Long-term projects.
People who developed ways of compensating earlier in life may suddenly find those systems no longer sufficient.
Adult ADHD therapy can focus on practical functioning while also addressing years of frustration, self-criticism, or relationship difficulties that may have developed around these patterns.

What is the Difference Between ADD and ADHD?
ADD and ADHD are often used to describe different experiences, but ADD is no longer a separate clinical diagnosis.
Today, therapists use the term attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, or ADHD. What many people still call ADD generally refers to ADHD with predominantly inattentive symptoms. These may include difficulty concentrating, staying organized, managing time, following through on tasks, or remembering important details, without obvious hyperactivity.
Other people experience predominantly hyperactive and impulsive symptoms or a combination of inattentive and hyperactive symptoms. Whatever symptoms you may have, I tailor our therapy sessions to your specific challenges, strengths, and goals, regardless of the language you have previously used to describe them.
CBT & Practical Skills for ADHD
Cognitive behavioral therapy can help people with ADHD recognize thought patterns that contribute to avoidance and discouragement.
For example:
“I have already fallen behind, so there is no point starting now.”
“This project is too overwhelming.”
“I always mess things up.”
These thoughts can increase frustration and make action less likely. CBT helps challenge these patterns while building more useful behavioral strategies.
I may also incorporate solution-focused approaches, mindfulness/meditation, psychoeducation, organizational strategies, emotional-regulation techniques, and family interventions as appropriate.
